Flexi Rod Tips & Tricks

Flexi Rod Tips and Tricks

After constantly watching videos on youtube, I finally gave the flexi rods a try. I started off on dry hair and used a leave-in conditioner, hair oil and the Fantasia Argan Oil Curl Styling Pudding. You can read my post or watch the video for more details. Thinking back on how I did the curls, the products I used and what results I achieved. I've come up with a list of some of the lessons I learned and what I would do differently the next time I try this protective style again.

Do not overdo it with product

I wasn't sure how much curl pudding I needed for each section so I just applied enough to saturate it. Doing the back of my hair was a bit more complicated when it came to this, and I ended up using more product than needed. So the curl pudding just sat on the hair at the back of my head in white chunks which I didn't notice at first.

For soft curls, use a lightweight product

Curl puddings give hairstyles a nice hold, but some give too much hold and make it very crunchy. I would suggesting using a setting or wrapping lotion if you want to achieve soft curls. These will probably hold for a lower number of days, but I tend to co-wash twice a week so using a lighter products is fine for me.

Start off on dry hair to save on air drying time

This hairstyle takes longer to dry than braid outs or twist outs. So if you do not plan on staying under a hooded dryer, then you have to start off on dry hair or be prepared to wait endlessly for it to dry. I started off on dry hair and it took mine about 5 hours to dry. Imagine if I did this on wet hair and decided to air dry?!

Make sure the hair is 100% dry before you take out the rods

Styles like this always require the hair to be fully dry in order to get the best results. If you take out the rods while your hair is still damp, the curls with be stretched and will have frizz. So make sure to check the middle of your hair, and if that is dry then go ahead and take out the rods.

Do you have any tips on how to get the perfect flexi rods?
