Experience of being Newly Natural

Newly Natural, Natural hair, Curly hair, African hair

About 3 weeks ago, I took a pair of scissors into my hands and started cutting. I had been transitioning for 1.5 years and felt like I was finally ready to say goodbye to the damaged ends, and welcome being fully natural. At the same time, I was nervous because I wasn't sure if my new length would look good. I did a wet cut because it was easier for me to see how much I need to cut off. Once I was done, I looked into the mirror and was so happy to see my curls. I had forgotten about shrinkage and cut it a bit shorter than I wanted, so I tried a wash and go the next day to see how it looks dry. The result was an afro.

This left me quite uneasy as I had no idea what to do with my 'new' hair. The first week after cutting my hair, I was really busy so I ended up doing a wash and go or putting it in a ponytail. I have been doing a lot of research on what hairstyles I can do with my current length, hopefully I will have it under control soon. Long or short, I was extremely happy for being able to let my hair air dry after wake-boarding with my brother. This is one of the reasons I felt I was ready to cut it this summer. I do a lot of swimming and snorkelling, so having transitioning hair in the summer was a bit difficult.

Last weekend, I tried my first braid out and loved the results. I'm looking forward to trying out different products on my hair and will probably be doing a natural hair growth series. If you have any holygrail products for hair growth, I'd love to know about them.

Lots of my friends have told me how much they love my hair and I've had a few strangers comment on it on the street. It really does feel amazing and I am so proud to have a fro. If you'd like to stay updated on my hairstyles and products I am using, make sure to follow me on instagram (itsanitasky).

What are your tips for long, healthy curls?
