Travel: Exploring Porto, Portugal

Porto, Portugal
Red roofs in Portugal
sightseeing in Porto

Earlier this month, I took some days off and hopped on a flight to Porto, Portugal. My friend who used to live there 2 years ago was going for a visit and I decided to go with. We had a place to stay outside the city and rented a car to make moving around easy. Because I was only going to be away for 3 days, I packed light knowing I might find some lovely things in Porto which I'd want to buy and didn't want the luggage to be overweight.

Tourism in Porto
Palacio da Bolsa

The first day was spent calmly. We had sushi for brunch because I was starving and then took my friend's dogs to the vet. While the dogs were being groomed, we drove to The Style Outlet in Vila do Conde to check out what's available. I was able to get myself a pair of Guess sunglasses which I love and think it was a complete steal for just 49. The rest of the day was spent resting and researching locations for the touristic trip I had planned for the next day.

On the second day, I picked up another friend from the airport and we headed into Porto. We decided to park the car and cover the city by foot, because it's a lot more interesting that way and things aren't so far from one another. We stopped by the Palacio da Bolsa and then headed for the Dom Luis I Bridge. On our way, we saw a few stands along the Ribeira and couldn't resist getting some new scarves and a few souvenirs.

The view from Dom Luis Bridge was breathtaking. You can literally see all of Porto and its cute red roofs. We spent quite a while just taking in the view and making countless pictures to capture the beauty of it all. We still had a couple of hours before we headed back, so we stopped by the Se Cathedral which I must say it extremely tall and the ceilings are so high, something I haven't seen in a lot of Cathedrals. Lastly, we stopped by Avenida dos Aliados. In the very heart of the city, the white buildings are beautiful and definitely worth visiting.

Visiting Porto, Portugal

On my last day in Porto, we heading off to the Jardins do Palacio de Cristal to see the view of the city, visit the romance garden and see if any peacocks felt like opening up to us. Finally, because the Cafe Majestic is so popular, we just had to stop by and check out the place the first book of Harry Potter was written. If you're thinking of where to go next, add Porto to your list, because it is definitely worth seeing.

Have you been in Porto? Please leave me your recommendations on where to visit next.

Review: MAC Fluidline Brow Gelcreme

MAC Fluidline Brow Gelcreme

I've been an eyebrow pencil girl for a very long time and found it easy to use and comfortable to carry around. My favourite brow pencil has been the Maybelline Brow Satin in Dark Brown because it contains both an eyebrow pencil and eyebrow powder. But then I visited the benefit counter and got my brows done. If you haven't been living under a rock then you already know that benefit released their new range of brow products, and the product I chose to try was the Benefit ka-brow. Once my brows were all done, I was amazing at how full and natural they looked. This was the moment I fell in love with brow gel creams. Prior to this, I had seen everyone on the Anastasia Deep Brow Pomade hype and just wasn't on the same wave. It looked so difficult to use that I wasn't inspired because my time availability in the mornings does not allow for such a long makeup routine.

Since I was new to the gel cream parade, I decided to get a cheaper alternative and practice with that to see how I get on prior to purchasing the ka-brow! But after searching in 3 different countries, I came up with nothing. So while strolling past MAC the other day, I decided to go check out the MAC Fluidline Brow Gelcreme and I instantly found the shade I needed.

The MAC Fluidline Brow Gelcreme comes in a paint pot similar to that of some gel liners. To apply the gelcreme you can use either an angled brush or a small brush. I find that the angled brush gives me a bit more control, probably because it is thicker. I tend to start at the ends of my brows and work my way in applying little strokes in the attempt to imitate my natural brow hairs. The more pressure you put, the darker the results you get.

The gelcreme isn't as easy to apply as an eyebrow pencil and it takes a bit longer to do your eyebrows because if you rush it, you are prone to make mistakes which are harder to correct than when using powder or pencil. The gel is waterproof and stays put until the very end of the day when you're taking off your makeup. The result is so amazing, that I've gotten quite a few questions about what product I use for my brows.

Price - approx. €19.
Likes - perfect brows that last all day.
Dislikes - not as easy to apply as an eyebrow pencil.

DIY Balayage with Colorcrem Blonde Box Creative Kit

Keranove Colorcreme Blonde Box

Balayage is the new replacement for ombre and I've got to say I am liking it a lot more. I've had ombre before and I really loved it then, but now I prefer the subtle addition balayage gives to the hair. After months of thinking about balayage and looking at pinterest images and videos, I finally decided to take the plunge, so I picked up the Colocrem Blonde Box Creative Kit by Keranove. I was quite nervous to do this myself because bleaching your hair damages it and since I am just getting my curls back, I didn't want to ruin them, but I really wanted the balayage look.

Colorcrem Blonde Box Creative Kit

The Colorcrem Blonde Box contains 5 items including bleaching powder, developer, anti-yellowing shampoo, a brush and gloves. To get the mixture necessary to lighten your hair, you need to mix the bleaching powder with the developer/ revealing cream and apply it in strokes to your hair. I divided my hair horizontally in 4 sections and started working from the back. I applied the mixture to the ends of my hair and worked upwards while making certain strokes longer and others shorter.

DIY Balayage using the Colorcreme Blonde Box Creative Kit by Keranove

Because curly hair is so forgiving with ombre and balayage, the process was quite easy since I wasn't bothered about getting a harsh line. I left the mixture on my hair for 15 minutes and then washed it off. And this is where trouble began because my hair turned slightly green. The reason was easily explainable because while on vacation I dyed my hair purple in the hopes that it would show on my dark hair, but that didn't happen. The dye was supposed to wash away after 5-15 washes and even though I thought enough time had passed, I still had some blue pigment in my hair which mixed with the yellow when bleaching and resulted in green. Because I held it for just 15 minutes I didn't get the colour I want but the issue now was getting the green out. After trying ketchup and that not working I waited a while and used another pack of the Colorcreme Blonde Box. This lightened my hair some more but didn't get the green out unfortunately. For now, I neutralized the green using conditioner mixed with temporary hair colour, but this washes off.

Results after my DIY Balayage

I really like the Colorcrem Blonde Box because I didn't feel like my hair was excessively dry after it and it didn't make my hair go orange but instead went a nice blonde colour, especially at the back where I started from. I'm still thinking about if I want to do another treatment on the front section in a few months to make the blonde more visible, but I'm happy with the results I've gotten and it'll look even better when the green is out, so if you have any tips on how to get the green out of my hair, please let me know.

What do you think of my new hair?

Review: Rimmel Brow This Way Brow Styling Gel

Rimmel Brow This Way Brow Styling Gel

Brows make such a huge difference in how my makeup looks. Even when I'm doing a natural look, I still have to fill in my brows with one product or another. Usually I go for a bolder look and use a brow cream gel like MAC Fluidline Brow Gelcreme to fill in my eyebrows, but for a more natural look I'm reaching for the Rimmel Brow This Way Brow Styling Gel.

Review of the Rimmel Brow This Way Brow Styling Gel

The Rimmel Brow This Way Brow Styling Gel is a tinted eyebrow gel which naturally fills in the brows and holds them in place. The product comes in a mascara tube and is easy to apply. There are 3 different shades to choose from so it fits your brows better as well as a clear option for those who just want to use this product to fix their brows. The possible shades include: Blonde, Mid Brown and Dark Brown. Because my eyebrows are really dark, I went for the dark brown shade.

The consistency of the product is just like a mascara, and it is very easy to apply. All you need is one coat to get a bit of colour and definition to your brows. I've been using it daily and love the results I get because my brows are naturally quite messy and tend to go in different directions. I like to call them Rebel brows. This keeps them in place all day while at the same time not feeling welded in place like you put a super hold gel on them. I've also used this on the weekend when I go to the gym and don't want to put on too much makeup but still want to look nice.

Rimmel Brow Styling Gel Review

If you're someone who likes a simple look and don't want to bother with an eyebrow powder or eyebrow pencil then this is definitely the product for you. It's also great for those who still use an eyebrow pencil or cream gel like me if you want to give your brows more direction and give them some hold. I'd recommend holding the wand at a tilted angle from your brows to avoid too much product getting on them from the tip of the wand.

Price - approx. €7.
Likes - defines and holds brows in place all day.
Dislikes - only 3 shades available.
Available - Feelunique, Superdrug, Boots.

Sparkling Marble Statement Necklace

How to style a statement necklace

Lots of times, I just wear a top, jeans and walk out the door. I live for the basics, but I also like to dress up. Whether it's for dinner, a night out or an event, I always spend a bit more time styling my outfit and also tend to add more accessories. Necklaces are more than often my weapon of choice, so when given an opportunity to collaborate with Happiness Boutique, I was thrilled.

Happiness Boutique Sparkling Marble Statement Necklace
Marble Statement Necklace

Happiness Boutique is a Berlin based online fashion store which sells clothing and accessories, and has a huge collection of jewellery including Necklaces, Earrings and Bracelets. My package arrived in a gorgeous white box with the company's logo on it in pink, and the necklace was carefully and delicately placed in bubble wrap with a couple of cards including care tips and a cute bookmark with a happiness quote. I like how focused the company is on not only making you look pretty but also feel happy. The company believes in spreading positivity and good vibes, and you can definitely tell this by the way they present their product.

Happiness Boutique Statement Necklace

The choice of necklace was a difficult one because they have so many amazing pieces to choose from, but as soon as I saw the Sparkling Marble Statement Necklace*, it was love. I picked this statement necklace because I'm a bit {ok maybe a lot} crazy about marble. Marble mixed with gold is my favourite combination and this necklace had it all. The necklace is made of marble, zinc {which is nickel and lead free} and rhinestones.

The rhinestones add more sparkle to the marble and definitely make it a piece to own. This necklace can literally transform the most basic outfit into something stylish for a night out. As we headed to dinner with a couple of friends, I was short for ideas on what to wear, so I chose a pair of ripped jeans with a black top and added this gorgeous necklace to complete the look. It completely transformed my look and gave me just what I was looking for. So out the door I went looking fabulous and feeling very happy.
