Starting off: {Skincare}

Hello my lovely readers. I am currently joining Stephanie of Steph's Inside Voice in the Starting Off project. Which is a way to reach out to those just starting off with makeup and share what I know and help you in any way I can as you start your beauty adventure. We are starting off this project with skincare, which I think is amazing because if you do not have a good start, your makeup will not look good.

Skincare is a broad term used to define as the name suggests everything involved in taking care of the skin in order to have healthy, glowy skin. Some people need to do less to have good skin, others have to put quite an effort. This usually depends on the person, their skin type, their way of life, climate they live in, etc.

Now, I'd like to talk a little bit about skin types because knowing your skin type will help determine what products you should use. I have oily skin and previously had a lot of acne which was hell. I still struggle to have great skin and glad it is a lot better now.
Even though 2 people have the same skin type, they may skill have different products that suit them. Just because 1 product suits me doesn't necessarily mean it would suit you. You just have to try them out and find the ones that fits you.

Taking care of your skin will involve a couple of steps which will be carried out daily such as cleansing, toning, moisturizing, and protecting the skin. Other's such as exfoliating or face masks can be done as required. This may be once a week or less often.

Cleansing
Cleansing your skin is important as it removes any dirt or makeup from your face and leaves it clean thereby giving it the possibility to breathe. Depending on your skin type, you may want to cleanse once or twice daily. Always remember that removing your makeup at night and cleansing your face is very important. You can use a makeup remover or olive oil to remove your makeup. When washing your face, never wash your face with cold or hot water. Luke warm water is what you want to go for. I personally cleanse my face twice a day using a birch tar soap, Garnier Pure Daily Gel Wash or Alterra cleaning foam. Wet your face, apply a bit f the product on your hand and wash it off with lukewarm water.

Toning
Toning is said to restore the PH balance of your skin. Some tonners just restore the balance which others are also said to kill bacteria, control shine or contain a spot treating ingredient. I personally use a product which will shock quite a few people. It is the Dr. Nona Mouthwash which can be obtained from a Dr. Nona representative or online. Apply the product on a cotton pad and clean your face.

Moisturizing
Moisturize your face twice a day independent of what skin type you have in order to keep it properly hydrated. If you have dry skin {depending on how dry it is} you may want to invest in moisturizers which contain shea butter and ones which contain SPF 15 or higher as dry skin needs more protection from the sun. If you have oily skin, do not think that you do not need to moisturize. You do! Just pick the right type of products for oily skin. I currently a few products which I use for moisturizing my oily skin e.g Neutrogena Visibly Clear Oil-free Moisturizer, Lumene Glow Without Shine or Dr. Nona Solaris Body Lotion. Apply the product to your fingertips and then gently apply to your face making sure not to pull on your face too much.

Protecting
Protecting the skin using product which contain SPF is very important. The ultraviolet rays from the sun are known to harm the skin and therefore just because you do not get a sun burn easily doesn't mean you do not need to protect your skin. You can either use a moisturizer that contains SPF or a foundation. Apply this either under your foundation or if you are using a foundation with SPF, then just apply as usual.

Exfoliating
Exfoliating helps remove dead skin and deeply cleans the pores leaving your face cleaner that using just a cleanser. The easiest way to exfoliate is by using a facial scrub which contains tiny beads. You will see a huge difference once you start doing this once a week or as needed for your skin. I use the Garnier Pure 3 in 1 Wash/ Scrub/ Mask which can be gotten at any drugstore or purchased online at Superdrug Feel Unique or other stores. Apply a bit to your finger tips, then put this on your face and rub in circular motion.

Face masks
Pamper sessions do not only have to happen at the spa. Face masks are applied after cleansing the skin and there are so many to choose from. A peel-off mask will be great for oily skin & a moisturizing mask will be great for dry skin. I use quite a few different ones. Some of which include Himalaya Herbals Almond & Cucumbers Peel-off Mask, Balea Peel-off Mask, Balea Clarifying Dead Sea Mask, Balea Cleansing Mask With Zinc and so many more to choose from.

  1. Love this series. It's usually very informative.
    Oh the Lumene skin care stuff is really good. I don't remember trying anything from this brand thinking it wasn't good. The finns did a great job by creating that line. :)
